Dilated fundus examination is must for all diabetic patients at least one year initially and subsequently 6 months if they have retinopathy. Laser treatment is must for patients developing retinopathy as it is vision saving many a times.
Sugar level control is equally important in all patients.

It is very important to get your beloved-one’s eyes checked up from an Ophthalmologist at the age of 4 years before admitting in the school as the child cannot complain of decreased vision. It has to be ruled out by an ophthalmologist after dilated examination of fundus and dilated retinoscopy if required under sedation.
This can prevent amblyopia or lazy eye in many children. Even the treatment of occluding one (better eye) eye and trying to improve the vision of lazy eye is very fruitful in this age.
